"I am no longer a kid, but my imagination remains more reliable than my memory. It may be worth bearing that in mind as you turn these pages."I'm not sure what the one-star reviews are referring to, but it doesn't seem to be the book itself. Sure, it's clearly written by a musician and not a journalist. True or not, I found the stories fascinating and, just like his music, I found myself pulled in by the strong imagery and distinctive voice. I came out of it feeling like I both deeply know Rich and have no idea who he is. It could have been truer, but that wouldn't have made it any more honest.
as writers, our first job is to...entertain! how something happened and how we remember it are very different things.this was a quick read. i dug it. although the first and second half seemed to be written by two different people..fun and cool read.
I found this book an interesting read. After finally getting a copy (it wasn't so easy to do, when it first came out, in the States) I couldn't put it down, and went through it in about three evenings. Each story could stand on its own, but they've been woven together here, for our amusement. Even if you don't like baseball or hip hop music, I recommend that you check this book out.
I love this book. Everything that's special and unique about Terfry's music is reflected in these stories. It reads a lot like the movie Big Fish. Obviously not all of this stuff happened, but it's told from the perspective of an eccentric storyteller's subjective memory and embellished upon to add excitement. I was hooked in the first few pages when he called Sherry, "a real basket of oranges." It's witty, charming, and a lot of fun.On a side note, all of the one star reviews are by accounts who have only posted those reviews. It's most likely a single person with some kind of problem and too much time on their hands. The reviews do not, in my opinion, reflect the merits of the book.
Can't help but notice most of the reviews here are written by people who have never left a review on ANYTHING other than the harsh and obviously personal reviews they left on this book. And are also most likely all the same person or stemming from the same person/people. If you like Buck 65's poetic and personal anecdotes you've read on his facebook or elsewhere, you'll love the book. If you love his music, you'll love the book.
I felt the need to even out those reactionary reviews. There are people who will praise Hemingway & Bukowski but never once give them a 1 star review because of their misogyny. When people write autobiographies they are generally telling superhero tales of themselves and deciding what to keep. In the book "Ham On Rye" Bukowski won all fights and met the ladies of his dreams. Regardless of what you think of him, Rich is an excellent storyteller. This isn't some fluff dictated to a manager and "co-written". I personally don't care about the authenticity of a Bukowski book which I love and I don't care about the authenticity of Buck 65's book either. These are intriguing and entertaining stories. For those reviewers below - why don't you spend some time outside of your little Canadian bubble and focus on criticizing people who are active & public life long misoginists - instead of progressive artists who have certainly fumbled and made mistakes like all of us have. Donald Trump may be a great new target for you!
I am a die-hard Buck fan, and when I heard about this book I thought it'd be absolutely amazing to finally hear all these stories in full. Alas, his hybrid of fact and fiction confused and disappointed me... I really wanted a fully honest depiction of who he is, otherwise it's little more than fantasy short stories.I wasn't fond of trying to decipher what was real and what wasn't. It was all tainted in my mind, so I instead treated it as a work of fiction. It was decent in this respect, but it didn't really drag me into a wondrous story.Overall, a pretty perplexing book. I read it once and never went back to it. I enjoyed it while I was reading but I don't think I'll do it again.
Mildly annoyed that there apparently isn't a print edition available stateside, so I had to import it from Canada, but it was totally worth the hassle. Rich Terfry as Buck 65 has brought me hours of ear candy, and his obvious love of language as art carries over into narrative with grace and style. Although the style is straightforward and direct in an immediately enjoyable an accessible style, the effect is definitely one of Proustian reverie. The writing style most reminds me of the _Autobiography of Mark Twain_. I've given up on sleep the last four nights to get through this, and I'm probably gonna read it again straight through tomorrow.
