From p. 91 of this book: "The modern demon-deliverance ministries are predicated on two fundamental errors. First, they misread the biblical record and fail to distinguish between moral evil and situational evil. They cast out 'demons' of moral evil, something neither taught nor illustrated anywhere in Scripture. Second, they fail to reckon with the general mode shift away from the command-control mode and toward the classic mode."What Powlison means by situational evil (mentioned above) is "suffering, hardship, unpleasant and harmful events, death" (p.65). Here is how the author describes the classic mode (mentioned above): "The leading elements of the classic mode of spiritual warfare are best captured by Ephesians 6:10-20: reliance on the power and protection of God, embracing the Word of God, specific obedience, fervent and focused prayer, and the aid of fellow believers. Spiritual warfare with the power of evil is a matter of consistently and repeatedly turning from darkness to light in the midst of assailing darkness. Christians fight spiritual warfare by repentance, faith, and obedience." (p.36)Halfway through reading this book, I asked myself if demon-deliverance ministers are disobedient when they apply their misinterpreted scripture. Page 98 helped me answer that question: "EMM advocates, in contrast, have radically redefined the purposes of demon deliverance -- redefining human nature, God, and the devil along the way -- without biblical warrant." I answered my question by acknowledging that only God knows the degree to which people are valuing their own thoughts more than God's and thus not searching the scriptures as diligently as they should.Fortunately, Powlison has searched the scriptures for us, revealing how the command-control mode which Jesus used was for then but not now. The author imparted to me an understanding of the framework and context of various scriptural passages which mention spiritual warfare. Since I now have a better understanding, I highly recommend this book.
Wow! Graciously critical, clearly written, simply expressed, and, most importantly, biblically faithful.Oh, how I wish Baker (or some other publisher) would reprint this excellent book. I want this in my church library; I want every pastor I know to read this.Powlison carefully summarizes what the Bible says about spiritual warfare, while gently critiquing some excesses and aberrations that have become widespread and popular among Bible teachers and Christians. His most helpful reminder, perhaps, comes by simply pointing out our tendency to allow our experiences to govern our understanding of Scripture, rather than doing the harder work of allowing the Scriptures to govern our understanding of our experiences, especially whenever we're seeking to interpret spiritual aspects of our experiences.Such a quick read, this book proves to be comprehensive and effectively the best coverage of a huge topic vital to everyday Christian living. It was worth the price I paid, but I do hope it becomes available less expensively and more widespread someday soon.
My interest in reading this book was to gain an insight into what place exorcism should have (if any) in relation to discipleship and counseling methods (that is how much priority should it be given). With regard to this specific interest, Powlison positively contributed to my understanding by categorizing recent perspectives on biblical demonology into 5 unique perspectives: 1) Charismatic theology - best represented by Derick Prince, 2) Dispensationalist perspective - best represented by C. Fred Dickason, M Bubeck, and Merrill Unger, 3) Fuller Theological Seminary perspective advanced by Peter Wagner, and Wayne Grudem, 4) Broadly Evangelical theology pushed by Neil Anderson, and lastly 5) Powlison's own version of Classical mode spiritual warfare. According to this paradigm position 1 constitutes a far leftist bunch with too much zeal and a lack of knowledge to such a degree that they are dismissed from the start of the book (which is okay with me). Position 5 is the opposite extream which advances discipleship and counseling methods to the exclusion of allowing any role for exorcism. Powlison recruits many of my Puritan heroes to support him in this endeavor, but I don't think they would agree with his characterization of their perspective. I think that many of them would actually come closer to position 4. Unfortunately, Powlison does not interact with position 4 very much, but instead spends most of his time critiquing with admittedly a broad brush the other 3 positions. Since his language is encompassing, it is hard to make out who he is talking about. Most of his criticisms are directed against exocists as a whole. But in light of the fact that C Fred Dickason's name appears in many of the endnotes it is likely that this is who he had in mind for most of his complaints. This is perhaps the most irritating feature of this book. I'd prefer more specific criticisms, than those advanced here. Even if space is limited, treating exorcists under such an admittedly broad-brush looks more like complaining than offering edifying critique.
Very helpful. I wish he would revise it - clearing up some ambiguities - and re-publish.We need something clear and biblical like this now more than ever.
Carefully written book that explores various thoughts on spiritual warfare. This is a very balanced well explained book all rooted in scripture. Highly recommend to anyone seeking truth on this subject. This author can always be counted upon for well researched and documented books.
A helpful book about the traditional view on spiritual warfare
